Advanced Methods in Psychotherapy

Objective of course:
- To learn about few of the advanced methods currently used in modern psychotherapy.
- To learn what works in therapy and how client and therapist can pay attention to what works.
Content of course: Since the initiation of modern “talking cure” by Sigmund Freud in the late 19th century (better known as psychoanalysis) about 400 different methods were developed to help wide variety of psycho-physical human suffering. This course will focus on the major schools of psychotherapy currently in practice
Method of teaching: The teaching will be based on structured lectures, but the teacher will encourage the participants to engage in discussions, simulations, presentations and sharing of personal views and experiences.
Course plan and lectures specific content:
Brief history of psychotherapy
Introduction to 21st-century psychotherapies
Psychoanalysis and psychodynamic psychotherapy
Psychopharmacology and the medical models of therapy
Behavior, cognitive and third generation CBTs
Client-centered therapy (humanistic)
Constructive Therapies (solution-focused, narrative, Ericksonian, interactional)
Logo-therapy existential psychotherapy
Family therapy
Integrative Psychotherapy
Positive& well-being psychotherapy
Present (SST) and brief psychotherapies
Course requirements:
- Basic requirement for passing the course: Attendance and active participation in at least 80% of classes.2.
- 3 brief academic (or free-style) papers (each paper length: two pages of double spaced typed pages). Each paper is 20% of the final grade
The topics are:
1. Creating therapeutic alliance via listening
2. Changing views using re-framing, re-labeling and other ways of giving new meanings the client’s story.
3. Using therapeutic “rituals” in order to create a change
Deadlines: 1st paper by midnight March 30th
2nd paper by midnight April 20th
3rd paper by midnight May 15th
Final paper: 'My preferred method of psychotherapy". 40% of your final grade
Deadline for final paper May 30th
(Students may choose to do a presentation of the method in class)
- No final exam.
- Final class grade is based on the average of the 3 term papers (total of 60%) and one final paper or presentation (40%).
