Descartes in the Matrix

Descartes in the Matrix

Dr. Noa Gedi

Course Description:

A major signpost of the current era and a central theme in the digital discourse is the technology of virtual reality (VR). Aside from its significant and far-reaching implications for applied science the existence of a parallel artificial world, both instigates and challenges our conception of what is “real” as well as other fundamental philosophical concepts like “truth”, “substance”, “causality”, “free will”, “personal identity”, and “knowledge”.

The course will focus on the metaphysical aspects of virtual reality and its implications for human existence and experience through philosophical analysis and in conjunction with several science fiction films and other materials.

Course Requirements:

Attendance, assigned readings, mid-term (20%), final take home exam (80%).
